The wonderful old “Elephant” pub was an integral part of Woolton Village; modernisation came, the pub is now called “Casa del Cocodrilo” (WHAT!!), and the iconic elephants head was removed from the wall, amid much local furore; However, above the beer garden, this wonderful sign hangs on....for now.

Higsons Brewery was first established in Stanhope Street, Liverpool in 1780. The brewery operated on this site for over 200 years until it was taken over by Boddingtons in 1985.  The Brewery has now been operated by Cains since 1991.

This water tower at the top of Everton brow was built in 1864 by Thomas Duncan and these days is noticed largely at night as it’s bathed in blue light and can be seen for miles.  Whilst even more imposing close up it’s also quite a shock to discover that the tower is surrounded by a modern housing estate.

Sunday morning dog walking on Everton brow and I can never work out the city from a distance.  Inside the centre, you can almost walk anywhere in a matter of minutes.  But step away and it all seems to open up with St.John’s Beacon looking miles away from the Liver Buildings and the new apartment towers on the docks.

Beating Tanerife in Anfield and the hairdressers out in Speke which calls itself Speke Hairport, Farther Treads in Bootle is the out and out winner in the shop sign contest. And as the sign says ‘Our Tyres Are So Cheap It’s A sin’.

The song ‘In My Liverpool Home’ states that we’ve got one to spare but is there anybody out there going to say which one’s the spare one when both are stunning, but very different, pieces of architecture?  This is the Anglican one as seen from Hope Street, the street which separates the two.  That street is also the home of the Philharmonic Pub and Hall, The Everyman Theatre, 60 Hope Street, part of John Moore’s University, Blackburne House, Hope Street Hotel and a clutch of design studios.
