Award winning journalist Lew Baxter gets a feel of being on the other side of things today. Here being photographer by senior staff photographer Eddie Barford. Lew was being interviewed by journalist David Charters for a forthcoming article about China in light of the announcement that Liverpool will attend the 2010 Expo. Lew is an Old China hand having lived there for 7 years and his adopted name Lao Hugong in China means Old Bearded Man, which always causes amusement with people from China.

Traditional Irish music - this music group can be found in numerous venues around the city. They are all non professional musicians who love what they do. The band leader who plays a myriad of instruments and sings is called George Wilson. He has been playing in the group for 20 years. The present line up who have been together for 6 years include Mike Hulme (Irish pipes), Steve Fletcher (Banjo) and cousin of George Harrison of Beatles fame is Gerry Fox (lead singer and guitar). Tonight they were playing in Waterloo at “Touchwood” a local bistro much to the delight of the locals.

This annual Caldy Sevens Rugby tournament always pulls in the crowds. The tournament is one of the oldest sevens competitions in world and has been running for 65 years. 

Looking across the rooftops of Liverpool from Colquitt Street. Were about 4 stories up at number 14 and looking out across some of the oldest Georgian building’s that can be found in Liverpool. To the right you can see the new Liverpool PCT/NHS Art-House square offices and off into the distance across the river, the Birkenhead tunnel venting tower. There used to be a wonderful view from up here right down into the city but as developments have sprung up all over, the view has diminished. I remember when you could see the Liverbuilding’s to set your watch. Mind you not advisable as the clocks kept stopping.

The Roman Catholic Cathedral opened in 1967 with its modern, circular design and glorious multi-coloured windows. Dating from the 1930s, the majestic barrel vaults of fine brickwork and granite pillars in the original Lutyens Crypt offer a sharp contrast in architectural styles. Architects throughout the world were invited in 1960 to design a Cathedral for Liverpool which would relate to the existing Crypt, be capable of construction within five years, cost at the current prices no more than one million pounds for its shell, and most important of all, express the new spirit of the liturgy then being radically reformulated by the Second Vatican Council. Of 300 entries from all over the world, Sir Frederick Gibberd’s (1908-1984) design was chosen, and building began in October 1962. Less than five years later, on the Feast of Pentecost, 14 May 1967, the completed Cathedral was consecrated.
